Nap Pepin, an electronics engineering technologist from Canada, had a vision four years back. He wanted to improvise the BugE EV, even though it is a high performing vehicle; he still wasn’t satisfied with it. So, he made some tweaks and the vehicle responded like anything. The speed increased, and so did the range. And that mars rover look didn’t look bad either. The BugE was transformed into something new by Nap Pepin.
BugE EV has a top speed of 80 kmph. It comes in a kit form, which the users can pin themselves. But, even with all this Nap felt unsatisfied. He wanted more; he wanted to break the limits set by BugE. He replaced the BugE M34 lead acid battery with a lithium ion battery. He developed his own custom battery management system. This propelled the EV from a top speed of 80 kmph to 130 kmph. Not only that, the range of the vehicle also increased from 48 km to 200 km.
He still wasn’t satisfied. The adrenaline rush wasn’t enough for him. So, after much contemplating, and after many sleepless nights, the ‘Lithium Hawk’ was born. And for an EV, it can rush past you at an amazing 197 kmph. Hawk has an aluminum frame. With 1,976 lithium cells to give it power, it can even run a 50 hp brushless induction motor. Albeit the work is still going on, and the range will be known only when the machine is fully complete. Nap claims that the range will be around 240 km. He has configured the EV as a reverse trike. An AC transmission system gives power efficiently. A Curtis controller on the vehicle optimizes vehicle performance like throttle map, torque and current limits. Regenerative braking recovers the energy lost while braking.
It is an awesome vehicle. With its impressive performance and rover looks, it is an ideal EV to help you do your bit for the environment while enjoying the ride.
