The world population is growing day by day with a jet speed and all the world cities are congested with migrants due to the industrialization. With the increase in population, the transportation requirement also increases causing huge damage to the environment. Hence, there is an immediate requirement to develop the non-polluting micro mobility concepts as a supplement to the traditional transport.
Electric bikes are eco friendly and are having comparatively cheaper traveling expenditure than regular traditional bikes. They don’t create sound pollution, don’t release hazardous CO2 emissions, and are good for maintaining physical fitness as many of them can be used as normal bicycles when required. These are portable and easy to carry too. Hence, these bikes have got much popularity particularly in crowded urban cities.
1. Grasshopper Foldable electric bike
David Goncalves, an industrial designer from Birmingham, United Kingdom, designed the concept bike Grasshopper. It’s a foldable, portable electric bike designed for city journeys and you can carry it as a trolley when not in use. This bike is suitable for all age groups with its unique bendable seat and adjustable handlebar as per the rider’s height. You can recharge it inside your home or workplace. The Grasshopper has also won the ‘merit prize’ in the 12th International Bicycle Design Competition held at Taiwan in 2008.
2. YikeBike
The YikeBike is an amazing invention from the Kiwi design team and it is an electric bicycle. It is a miniature bike that weighs only 9.8 kilograms, folds to 67×56×12 cm and fits in a backpack. It is powered by a 1.2 KW high power brushless electric motor, and has lights and indicators for ensuring safety while riding. YikeBike is suitable for city journeys of below 10 KM and able to reach a speed of 20 KM/Hr.
3. Dahon electric folding bike
Dahon Boost is the lightest electric bike designed by Dahon, the world leader in folding bicycles. In fact, it is the blend of a portable folding electric bike and a pedal bicycle. The Boost folds to a size of 36″x66″ and weighs only 18.5 Kg. It has a 250 W motor and a unique 3 x 3 gearing system, which allows nine different riding modes and comprises of torque sensors for applying the motor power in line with the pedal force applied by you. It is compatible for hill climbing with its direct drive system. With the Boost, you can ride like a standard bike with the electric drive system turned off.
4. ARMADILLO folding bike
Hyijoong Rhie designed the ARMADILLO folding bike, which overcomes the nuisance in the folding process that’s usually there in other folding bikes. This bike comes with a central circular revolving axis. By making an ideal angle with this axis, the wheels and seat look like a stand (tripod) allowing you to keep the bike at rest when not in use. This tripod comprises of a recess for carrying the bike upon ones shoulders or one can drag the bike by the wheels just like a traveling suitcase.
5. Capella
Motivated by the mythological creature Unicorn, which is the controller of star Capella in Greek folklore, Truong Minh Nhat designed Capella. It’s a foldable, lightweight electric bike and is compact enough to fold into a backpack. It’s a perfect city bike and can run at a top speed up to 30 KM/Hr. After a mere charging of two hours, it can run up to 12 KM.
6. The VeloMini folding electric bike
VeloMini is a light-weight folding electric bike running with 180 W brushless hub motor and is able to move with a speed of around 19 KM/Hr. For the ease of carrying when not in use, you can fold it to as small as a guitar case size. It is powered by 24 V, 6 Ah lithium-ion battery and comes with three riding modes. It weighs only 14 Kg and can carry riders up to 95 Kg. It easily folds in just two seconds and is convenient for people, who prefer to combine public transport with a bike ride on their daily journey.
7. PCK Bike
PCK Bike is a portable foldable electric bike and has been designed collectively by Taiwanese designers Chao-Han lee, Yen-chi Yu, and Cheng-Yu Tseng. It is easily foldable into a portable unit and has a storage space for users. It is designed for the busy Taiwanese roads and facilitates cycling for short distance travel.
8. Brompton electric bike
Brompton electric bike is the lightest electric bike in existence. The hub motor fits inside the front wheel and makes it the smallest folding bicycle. The batteries are mounted in a detachable front carrying bag and can be taken away for independent charging. This bike facilitates the easiest and most portable method of urban transportation.
9. Dahon Matrix
The Dahon Matrix folding bike is having a BionX electric motor kit and is one of the best electric bikes available today. It has a sensor to detect how hard the rider pedals and kicks in proportionate percentage of motor power. You can pedal when you want and recharge the battery for having continuous ride with a single charge.
10. Volkswagen Folding Electric Bike
With the concept of non-polluting micro mobility, Volkswagen has revealed its folding electric bicycle. It is a sleek portable cycle and is foldable to a mere size of your spare tire for accommodating in the boot of your vehicle. It has a top speed of 20 KM/Hr., and you can charge this bike with the vehicle’s DC current.
