Asmita Prasad:
They say art imitates life. So I guess we shouldn’t be too alarmed (pun intended) by this deadly Diffusible Alarm Clock. Created by hardware designer and software professional Michael Krumpus, this alarm clock means business, though we cannot say with any certainty whether or not the timepiece was inspired by, let’s say the more extreme-minded folks and organizations in the world, but it does reflect the angst felt by city-dwellers across the world (fanned by over-zealous policemen patrolling highways at night and airport security personnel who vent their perversions in the guise of “unavoidable” pat-downs).
Coming back to the clock, it does work pretty much the same way a bomb (prop) works in blockbusters. There are four wires, two of which are decoys, one speed up the timer and one, of course shuts the damn thing off. If you cut the right wire, the alarm stops immediately, if you cut the decoys, well, nothing spectacular happens and you have to go on cutting the others to find out which one will stop the timer.
If you cut the right one (at first go, or after having gone through them all) the timer stops, if you are unsuccessful, well, (bummer alert) it doesn’t explode! Heck it doesn’t even make menacing noises and throw a fit! It just meekly lets its red LEDs go into mini-frenzy and then the timer gets reset to 11 minutes or so. And that, ladies and gents, is the real buzz-kill of this otherwise astonishing creation. It should at least start to produce smoke or make that awful creaking sound that movies have when a facility is going into lock-down or something.
What’s even more annoying than the clock’s lack of thrill is the fact that once cut; the wires become useless and have to be replaced for further use. The designer however, “assures” us that they are easily replaceable and if you’re up for spending a few good minutes every day rewiring your alarm (which doesn’t even put in much effort in trying to wake you up BTW), you can easily do so since the wires are fitted in via a screw mechanism. And just to keep the users interested in the product, Krumpus even threw in a randomizer that ensures that the configurations for the wires i.e., which one would be the decoys and which would speed up the clock and which would diffuse the bomb, get randomized every time the wires are replaced.
The Diffusible Clock runs on a microcontroller by ATMega328 that is geared to a boot-loader by Arduino and Krumpus is offering the whole thing as a DIY kit for bomb enthusiast who just cannot go out and build themselves a real one because dumb terrorists ruined the fine art for everyone.
