Sunny Goel:
Have you ever imagined what happens to the tyres when they are changed after they are used for a long period. Now there are various possible scenarios like when you change the tyres either you leave them to the guy who changes them or you take them along with you and ultimately you dispose them. But if you leave them to the guy who changed your tyre he sells them to some rubber scrapper who ultimately burns them to extract the steel out of it. There is one another possibility that they can be used by tyre retreaders for retreading tyres provided that they should not be tubeless. So most of you are thinking that nothing good and environment friendly is possible with the discarded tyres. But after going through this post you will not only come to know what actually is possible with these tyres which we normally consider useless but some of you might get inspired as well.
The Ordinary
Maisongomme: a garden office and a shed made by using the old recycled car tyres is something which you have never imagined, not even in your dreams. It might sound unbelievable but you have to believe this as every single word of it is true.
Inspiration
Maisongomme is a funky garden office which is sustainable and entirely made up of scrap materials which can be found anywhere and its roof and outer walls are entirely covered with discarded rubber tyres. This structure is created and made possible by the collective and creative efforts of Peter Merry and Marcella Siebert. The makers wanted to make a structure by using the scrap material like recycled wood, discarded tyres and some leftovers from an old shed and also wanted to help the environment. All these things lead them to create such a wonderful and creative design which is not only cheap but can be a great inspiration for those who can not afford expenses of an ordinary house.
The Extraordinary
This wonderful house Maisongomme covers an area 10×26 feet with the various salient features like long vertical windows which were recovered from a shop that was busted. These windows infuse the interior of the structure with abundant of light and also allows good ventilation. Maisongomme is creatively and artistically made by using old recycled woods, re-purposed trays of stainless steel, insulation glass, discarded car tyres and some leftovers from an old shed. The rubbery walls of this structure not only make it outstanding but also does make it waterproof and winter resistant with their stone wool insulation. The interior walls of this fantastic structure are made up of different types of found wood blocks. Thus this structure is a fine example of modern and creative architect even if we don’t have big budget and plentiful new resources.
The Making
Though the making of this project is quite simple yet it is impressive. The walls of this structure are made up of recycled wood and in the interior walls the different kind of found wooden blocks are used to give it a patchy look from inside. There are different vertical windows with insulation glass which not only provide proper ventilation for the structure but also keep it cozy during winters and also allows abundant light inside the structure. The exterior walls and the roof is completely covered with the discarded tyres which also makes Maisongomme water and winter resistant. Thus this magnificent structure is standing on an area 10×26 square feet.
The Target Group
Maisongomme is designed by keeping in mind the lower section of society that simply cannot afford the expenses of an ordinary house and also the material which is used in its making is also very cheap or free of cost and can be found anywhere. Thus this structure is showing a wonderful way to those who cannot afford an ordinary house and also to those who want to help the environment in an Eco-friendly and creative way.
Usage
- Such structure provides a better option for cheap and environment friendly housing.
- The waste materials like recycled wood, discarded rubber tyres and various other scrap materials can be used in an Eco-friendly and creative manner to make such houses and thus environment can be prevented from polluting as these materials pollute the environment when they are discarded.
- People who can’t afford ordinary housing can go for such houses.
Related Trends
There are various other examples of such structures which are made up of recycled materials:

With years of research and development a unique formula was created to produce world best synthetic roofing material. Around 600 to 1000 discarded car tyres are used in the making of an average house’s roof.
- Recycled Car Tire House in New Mexico: In New Mexico one another beautiful house is made by discarded rubber tyres and recycled bottles without using even a single ordinary brick which is another fine specimen of this trend.
- Earthships for Haiti: To help the earthquake victims in Haiti architect Michael Reynolds also supported the idea of making houses from the scrap materials like discarded tyres, recycled bottles and cardboard etc.
- Tyre House in U.S. : There is one tyre house in U.S. as well. The retaining and exterior walls of this house are made up of stacks of discarded tyres which are filled with mud. Some people are so fascinated by these houses that a woman in U.S. even takes charge around $15 from the people for a tour of her home.
