Inciting a passer by on the road to a one-on-one challenge of any kind is considered dangerous across the globe. Most people get to spend a night in the slammer if they start brawling on the streets. But Yahoo is trying to get people to channelize their social competitiveness via an interactive multi-player game installed at bus stops. Apparently, the makers of the game would install giant touchscreens at bus stops and invite people to play them for free!
Urban youth are already getting a bad reputation globally for their lack of social etiquette, and giving them a chance to scare old ladies waiting for a bus away from a bus shelter to compete in these games may not be so great for the law and order situation. But with Yahoo fast losing their game-loving crowds to Facebook games, the Yahoo! Bus Stop Derby looks more like a desperate attempt to stay relevant in the industry than a real cha-ching project for the company.
Wrapped under the seemingly innocent pretext of making waiting for the bus fun, the Yahoo! Bus Stop Derby is looking to turn bus stops into social gaming hubs via a two-month citywide challenge across San Francisco. Located at 20 high-traffic Muni shelters in the city, the Yahoo! Bus Stop Derby offers locals to play LCD touch-screen games at the interactive digital transit shelters developed by the Obscura Digital Team. Each shelter would be fitted with an interactive 72-inch touch screen and would offer users to play live head-to-head games pitting 20 San Francisco neighborhoods split into 20 teams against each other. The winner of the Yahoo! Bus Stop Derby would get an OK Go concert held in their neighborhood for free!
