The world is fast running out of space available for residential purposes and with the world’s population migrating to the cities at an unprecedented rate, it is time that we started looking at viable alternative housing solutions. One of the frontrunners among the modern age housing solutions are houseboats which provide people with all the comforts of a life on the land without costing as much as premium real estate. The KY Houseboat concept created by designer Anton Bakerjian in collaboration with Andrew Owens looks to present a feasible water-based housing solution that not only improves upon existing houseboat designs, but also offers a brand new perspective on sustainable living.
Designed to be fully functional as well as energy efficient, the KY Houseboat is basically a reinterpretation of the existing Kentucky Houseboat industry. The project looks at Micro Hydro technology as an optimal source of power that can run up to 1,000 homes on a single unit. Since Mico Hydro requires no damming and needs little maintenance when used, it can provide a long-term, sustainable and clean power supply to an energy conscious home.
The KY Houseboat is, of course, not your regular water-borne home and removes the self-mobility of its predecessors to allow it to appreciate in value after a period of 8 to 10 years. By removing the need for a houseboat to also serve as a mode of transport, the designer was able to discard the linear shape of a regular houseboat and develop the project along the lines of a land-based villa.
