Even though most cities around the world have taxi-on-demand services that allow passengers to call for a cab by placing a call, most people still like to hail a ride the old fashioned way. However, with ever expanding populations, taxis aren’t always readily available and people either have to wait for one to arrive, or aggressively fend other people off when a free cab shows up. To allow people to bypass this chaotic situation, designers from 108 Industrial Design Studio came up with the Taxi Transfer Simultaneously concept.
Created to optimize urban travel options, the curbside call-and-response system for taxi drivers and passengers helps cabbies find passengers and allows the public to secure a cab without heckling for it. When the prospective passenger needs a ride, they simply have to stand in front of the curbside device for ten seconds and a signal is then automatically sent to the nearest free taxi which set course for the passenger’s location immediately.
Colored LED lights allow passengers to check whether their request has been processed and the default blue light changes to green as soon as a taxi has responded to the call and a taxi is on route to pick up. When the passenger step away from the device, the light again changes to blue and the device is ready for another passenger to place a request. The blue light also indicates that the device is in energy-saving mode between placement of requests.
With a lower shell crafted out of polypropylene, the device comes with a tough upper shell made from transparent fiberglass-reinforced plastic which protects the electronic components inside from the elements and also makes the device tamper-proof. The Taxi Transfer Simultaneously concept was created to integrate itself effortlessly into its environment and can easily be installed on the kerb.
