Rohit Ram Singh:
Work from home is now becoming a new work lifestyle. Not only it increases your productivity it also provides a sense of comfort and more family time. It also cuts down a lot of transportation cost and hence less traffic during office hours. Ben Harvey from Plymouth University has come up with a new communication device that would help people work from home. The designer has named it HomeCom.
The device has a touchscreen with a small voltage applied on each corner. When the screen is touched current is drawn from each corner to locate the coordinates of touch. The device works with a virtually projected keyboard and track pad. The virtual keyboard is projected on the table with the help of DOE (Diffractive Optical Element). Your finger movement is tracked with the help of CMOS camera in the device. The laser diode in the device would measure the distance of the fingers. The device can be clipped on the clothing or could be opened to stand on a table. It also has standard sound input and output in form of built in microphone and speakers.
This device has a caller ID that distinguishes callers with color and sound, so you don’t have to look at the screen to know if you want to attend the call or not. Another great feature of the device is external monitor support. You can hook in a bigger screen like a computer monitor to view documents and the HomeCom screen can be utilized for opening and closing documents. This would definitely increase the productivity. HomeCom can be configured to be used as a keyboard for your computer hence reducing computer hardware.
HomeCom has most of the things needed for office work. You can browse internet, send and view emails, work on documents and spreadsheets, send fax etc. The designer did a market research to incorporate the elements that are needed to provide full functionality on the device. A thinner screen on HomeCom would result in a portable device. Another variation of the design includes a folding design. The screen can be opened and then the clip would help it to stand upright on the desk. This design would also feature the same virtually projected keyboard. The designer has also thought of incorporating a physical keyboard in the device which would increase the usability of the device over time. So with HomeCom you work at home would be a breeze and your work desk will not be messy anymore. This portable device would also make you mobile and you can sit and work wherever you want.
