I was talking to a friend of mine the other day who told me there was no way she could live without her laptop. If it were to break or be lost she would have no choice but to go buy a new one immediately, regardless of the cost or her financial situation. I was taken aback by that and started thinking what I could not live without. My iPhone was the first thing that came to mind.
I get anxious just thinking about it but if I ever lost or broke my iPhone I would have no choice but to immediately go buy a new one. It has been ingrained into my daily life from the minute I wake up until right before I go to sleep. My phone serves as my alarm clock, my calendar, my main email reader, my entertainment, and my news source. Never mind the fact that I use it to keep in touch with everyone in my life.
Monday morning when I woke up I felt great and well rested which was surprising because Mondays are usually a slow start for me. I quickly realized why… I had over slept two hours and missed a meeting. I looked at my phone and realized the alarms had never gone off. On the way to work I checked Twitter and the news and found out that there had been a bug in the iPhone software that caused non-repeating alarms to not function properly.
This bug caused users worldwide to be late for work and miss flights and appointments on Saturday and Sunday. News reports claimed Apple was aware of the problem and the system would fix itself and be working fine on January 3rd. Well Monday was the 3rd and I missed a meeting, thanks Apple.
As upset as I was with my “smart”phone I was more upset with myself. How have I become so reliant on a technology? I tried to remember how I survived before my iPhone. I vaguely remember in high school carrying a CD player (and CD’s), along with a calculator, Gameboy, day planner, and a magazine for study hall. Now it is all on one device that’s smaller than a Walkman.
I am certain that within my lifetime I will be able to discard my wallet and use my phone to pay for items, but where does it end? At what point do we say, “ENOUGH. I want to do it myself.”?
Today is the start of my personal mobile resolution. My plan is to do one thing per day the old fashion way. Whether it’s asking someone for directions rather than looking at my phone or setting a separate alarm clock at night. I’m taking the power back.
