The metro, tube and subway systems have become an important part of the urban culture in most parts of the world. With most major metropolitan cities in the world relying heavily on these systems to move a bulk of their population every day, keeping track of individual ticket holders and maintaining security on these routes is a daily logistical nightmare. With public transport system being targeted by anti-social elements more frequently, there arises the need to have measures in place that are more advanced than the closed circuit camera systems but are not as intrusive or impossible as having teams of ticket checkers and security personnel at every transit point in every metro station. To boost the existing security and ticketing systems, designer Francois de Martin-Donos created this concept called simply the Lunar.
Developed in collaboration with designers Arthur Kenzo, François Hurtaud, Louis-Mathieu Chon and Valentin Gauffre, the Lunar is a sleek, adaptable public utility concept that would simplify the security and transport billing systems without compromising on the aesthetics of the public space.
The concept was developed primarily for a future extension of the Shanghai metro system. The Lunar looks to make the payments and security system on the public transport line more fluid for daily commuters. The device is developed around a comprehensive yet intuitive facial recognition system that allows users to pay for their daily commute swiftly.
The two part system allows users to use the larger kiosk-style device to create and save their personal data using their facial recognition, commute route and payment information. The second part of the device would be installed within the metro station entrances or other points of exits and would also be fitted with facial recognition gears to allow users to simply walk past them to input their ‘ticketing information’ for the transport.
