10 most unusual balcony designs

Design of a house is never complete without a wonderful balcony setting. It is that element in the design of a house that allows interaction of outer and inner environment. It is also a place where the inhabitants of the house can sit and relax over a cup of tea in the evening. Design of a balcony basically depends on the overall design and appearance of a house. A balcony is designed in such a manner that it mimics the overall architecture of the house. But there are some balcony designs which are rather different and unusual from the conventional balconies that we are used to seeing. In this article we are going to take a look at 10 such unusual balcony designs.

1. Metromorph car morphs into an elevator and balcony

The Metromorph car is truly a multipurpose vehicle in every sense of the term. Apart from functioning as a car, it also has the ability to transport its passengers up and down a tall building. As the rider reaches home, the vehicle parks itself vertically in front of his house and acts as the balcony of the apartment. The design of the Metromorph was done by Roman Mistiuk to solve parking woes that we face in the big cities due to lack of space.

2. Bloomframe balconies

Design of the Bloomframe balconies is quite innovative. These are actually window frames that open up into balconies. Size, color and material of these balconies can be customized according to the likes and dislike of the customers. These balconies have been designed by Hoffman Dujardin and they can be a great space-saving solution for your home.

3. Modulo Goes Garden Balcony

The balcony concept from industrial designer Francesc Gasch tries to promote the balcony as an extension of the interior of a house. That is why, the balcony of a residence should be designed with equal care and precision as is done in the case of the interior. The balcony should also have comfortable furniture, plants and proper lighting which would give the inhabitants a perfect relaxing atmosphere.

4. Modern Balcony Planter

Addition of just a few plants in the balcony always gives it that refreshing and natural look. The design students at the University of Nimes and Noémie Royer Lorraine Thirion have come up with a new idea where different shaped planters are used to plant different types of plants. These pots can be attached on both sides of the metal railing of the balcony at different heights. The designers have already implemented this idea on the balcony of the company MSV.

5. Balcony to Park Your Car by CarLoft

A German company named CarLoft has come up with this ingenious idea where you can literally park your car on your balcony. The idea is basically to create a giant lifting mechanism which lifts the cars to the level of your apartment. A big glass wall separates the balcony from the living area. This idea has already gained a lot of popularity as many builders in Berlin, Frankfurt and Hamburg are planning to build apartments with the CarLoft facility.

6. “Spaceless” by Sandy Lam

It is not possible for everyone to have a big and spacious balcony. Most often, balconies are small and narrow places where it is extremely hard to fit in some standard furniture. Now designer Sandy Lam has designed a balcony which would consist of built-in furniture. The furniture does not occupy any space on the balcony since they can be folded down on the balcony floor.

7. Honeycomb Modular Apartments

A housing complex in Slovenia has been designed in such a way that the balconies of the building remind one of a beehive. That is because the different apartments in the building have been designed to mimic the honeycomb of a beehive. But the most striking feature of the apartments is the vibrant and bright colors of the balconies. The purpose of creating such a structure was to provide dynamic elevation to the apartments as well as protect the privacy of the residents.

8. Modular Small-Space Balcony by Christian Lessing

The design of the multi-piece modular balcony by Christian Lessing takes a cue from the shelves of the retail stores to organize various elements of a balcony. The balcony has been designed specifically for people who cannot afford to have a big and spacious house. The design consists of many surfaces for planters and also has various other things like stools, a breakfast table and a flower pot holder.

9. Niimi Teacup Balconies

We all like to sit on our balconies and have a sip on our favorite brand of tea. But if you are living in Kappabashi, Tokyo then chances are you could well be having tea sitting within a giant teacup. The Niimi building in Tokyo has balconies designed in shapes of giant multi-colored teacups. This is actually a promotional strategy adopted by Niimi which is a restaurant known for its various brands of teas.

10. Casa Mila, La Pedrera

The Casa Mila building in Spain has balconies which are most unusual in design and shape. The balconies in this building sinuous and curves like a meandering river. The black metal railings on the balconies have various designs carved out on them. The building houses the shops of famous brands like Gucci and Maximo Dutti.
